FDA-approved Covid vaccine for children aged 5 to 11 years “very feasible” by Halloween, says the former FDA commissioner

Former Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, Dr. Mark McClellan told CNBC that it seems realistic for younger children to be vaccinated against Covid-19 based on the new data Pfizer released on Monday.

“These results are very encouraging, especially in terms of the ability of a very small dose to produce a very strong immune response,” said McClellan, a health policy expert at Duke University. “So it’s good that this is being done and that FDA action in a month seems very feasible.”

Pfizer announced that its Covid-19 vaccine is both safe and effective in children ages 5-11. Pfizer officials plan to file their data with the FDA by the end of the month. If the review process goes as smoothly as it does with teens and adults, recordings could be available to 5-11 year olds by Halloween.

McClellan explained the FDA’s rigorous review process during a Monday night interview in The News with Shepard Smith.

“It’s going to be a thorough process with the FDA,” said McClellan. “You are looking at all of the actual data, replicating the studies that are being reported.”

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children currently account for nearly 30% of all new infections nationwide. In context, children accounted for only 15% of all US cases during the January high.

When it comes to the general fight to fight Covid, McClellan told host Shepard Smith that when children can start vaccinating, “it will make a world of difference making schools safer to prevent the species from spreading.” that we see now ”.
